Web-Based Resources for Numeric Literacy

Excited for this workshop today to explore and evaluate the best of 2023 web-based resources for numeracy (numeric literacy), thanks to the sponsorship of The Literacy Cooperative of Greater Cleveland.

What is the difference between mathematics and numeracy? Numeracy is the ability to respond to mathematical information in a real-world context. Numeracy assessments measure how well adults can use math to solve everyday problems, and it should be a goal of childhood mathematics as well.

The instructional approaches and web-based resources shared in this session can be modified for use with a wide variety of learning contexts. One sample lesson will be shared from The Literacy Cooperative’s free and downloadable Contextualized Curriculum, intended for use with Integrated Education & Training (IET).

After an introduction to resources aligned with each instructional strategy, workshop participants will choose breakout rooms to explore and evaluate which resources are best for their own context.

A quote from 2012 that still holds true:

“My biggest professional hurdle is not getting people to do things they don’t want to do…it’s helping instructors to follow through on the good projects they do want to accomplish.  Khan Academy is no exception. Bob Stephenson in Kokoma, Indiana shares a possible solution: ‘I introduced the Khan Academy to my math tutors this summer. Although they were interested I am not sure anyone is using it at this time. I think I will begin tutoring a student in math using it to work through any problems and develop teaching strategies. After that I can present it to them again during a tutor in-service training and have results to back up my experience.’ Bob sounds like a guy I would like to work with!

As with any change, there can be anxiety, frustration and confusion starting something new. But the potential benefits in terms of learner engagement and profile tracking mean the investment of time and energy will be paid back with interest once classes, tutors, and programs get started.”

How will you follow through on what you learned today?
